25th Anniversary Banner

The City of Pickering is celebrating its 25th Anniversary with a special community art project!

A specially curated art installation, designed by a local artist, will adorn the exteriors of Pickering City Hall and the Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex. These temporary banners, expected to be installed in early Spring 2025, will celebrate Pickering’s growth and rich history. This artistic tribute offers a striking and meaningful visual representation of the community’s journey.

We’re thrilled to announce the shortlisted artists and their artwork designs for the 25th Anniversary Banner project:

Taylor De Nobrega, Marina Daley, and Aisha Ghouse.

About the Work

This piece exemplifies what makes Pickering so unique, its rich biodiversity, deep history, and where it stands now— a city where people come to raise their families. When the family in this painting are on their way to enjoying Pickering’s beautiful waters, they are also welcome to explore the story of the city and appreciate how it has become the Pickering we love today.

About the Artist

Taylor is an illustrator with a love of visual storytelling. She graduated from Sheridan College's Illustration Program and began her career as a background artist in the animation industry. She loves experimenting with fun colours, shapes and finding the perfect mood for each of her pieces! Taylor thanks the City of Pickering for their consideration for this project!

About the Work

As a new resident of Pickering, I’ve been drawn in by the city’s history and vibrant diversity. There is something new to discover in every area—whether it’s the serene waterfront I walk to daily, the beautiful green spaces, or the local people and businesses that give the city its unique energy. Exploring these places has not only inspired my work but also made me feel more connected to the community I’m now proud to call home.

‘Reflections of Pickering’ is a celebration of the city’s growth, honouring its history while imagining its future. The artwork uses a mirrored composition to represent the connection between Pickering’s past and present. The top half captures the modern

city: a dynamic landscape of iconic landmarks like City Hall alongside symbols of sustainability such as wind turbines. Diverse figures of all ages and backgrounds symbolize inclusion, progress, and intergenerational connection.

The bottom half reflects the city’s roots, showcasing Indigenous canoes gliding through water, and wildlife. The reflective waterline glows with golden light, serving as a bridge between the city’s historical foundations and its forward-looking aspirations. Together, these elements tell the story of a community that thrives on its resilience, unity, and shared vision for the future.

‘Reflections of Pickering’ is both a celebration of the city’s 25th anniversary and a tribute to the people and places that make it special. I hope this piece connects with residents, sparking pride in their community and serving as a reminder of Pickering’s resilience, unity, and bright future.

Marina’s art is a celebration of finding beauty and humor in the everyday, reminding us that there’s always a story waiting to be told.

About the Work

For the 25th anniversary of Pickering, I have created a piece that captures a visual journey from a black and white historic past, to a bright and colourful present, to my playful take on a futuristic Pickering, all while keeping the viewer engaged with small details and a simplistic overview.

The "past" includes buildings from old Pickering Village, old park benches and an old GO transit bus, which transitions into the "present", a bright yellow path which leads the viewers to Pickering's iconic City Hall, lush greenery and a GO train that transitions into the final part of the piece. The "future" of Pickering, a blend between our modern evolution all whilst staying true to our precious natural elements that differentiate Pickering from all our neighbouring cities.

This artwork is my personal tribute to Pickering, a city that has played a big part in shaping who I am as an artist. I hope it captures the spirit of growth and connection that makes Pickering so special, while also celebrating how the city has evolved over time.
