Mayor Ashe’s Statement on the Results of the 2025 Federal Liberal Leadership Race

Pickering, ON, March 10, 2025 – On behalf of the City of Pickering and its Members of Council, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Mark Carney, prime minister-designate, on his election as Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

As one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities, Pickering is eager to partner with the Government of Canada to navigate this unprecedented political-economic crisis, while strengthening our nation and making it more resilient. I wish you success in rallying the country towards a united, elbows-up, Team Canada approach.

In addition to job creation and infrastructure investment, we must finalize a new, modernized fiscal framework for municipalities and their residents, as I had recently proposed to Premier Ford. As we brace for the challenges of this trade war, I urge you to remain steadfast in protecting our environment and preserving Canada’s renowned quality of life.

As such, I ask your government to work with the City of Pickering and provincial counterparts to establish a tri-party funding agreement for the acquisition of Frenchman’s Bay in Pickering. Securing this vital natural asset will ensure it is returned to the public domain and permanently safeguarded from unwanted development.

Kevin Ashe
