Residents bring favourite neighbourhood projects to life through Pickering’s participatory budget process

Pickering, ON, February 10, 2025 – The City of Pickering is excited to announce that outdoor fitness equipment has been selected as the top-ranked neighbourhood project through the City’s first-ever participatory budget process.

As a result, $300,000 has been allocated in the 2025 Capital Budget, with funding provided through casino revenues. This significant initiative underscores the City’s commitment to fostering collaboration and promoting active public engagement in local decision-making.

Through the budget process, residents had a direct say on how a portion of the municipal budget could be spent, with close to 600 residents weighing in on five potential priorities designed to enhance the community’s quality of life. The most-supported project will now be implemented in each Ward, with final locations to be determined by City staff.

In addition to outdoor fitness equipment, residents considered options such as dog park enhancements, a shade structure with an outdoor gathering space, urban street furniture, or opting out of funding these neighbourhood projects entirely. Each proposed initiative aligned with the City’s Recreation & Parks Ten-Year Plan and Corporate Strategic Plan, ensuring that public investments support the long-term growth and vitality of Pickering.

“By implementing a participatory budget exercise, we’ve inspired residents to step forward as true decision-makers, alongside elected officials and City staff,” said Mayor Kevin Ashe. “Residents are the heart of this community, and this engaging process has given citizens a direct role in shaping the future of their neighbourhoods. Through this collaborative approach, we are fostering a stronger, more connected community.”

City staff will report back on timeline and project progress through regular updates to the project page, available at LetsTalkPickering.ca/Budget.
