Rotary Frenchman's Bay West Park has a new pop of colour! The work is located at Rotary Frenchman’s Bay West Park, at the south end of the path, and hung to bring creativity to the space, giving ordinary objects new purpose with colour and artistic expression.
About the Artwork
the many roles of nonstop blooms is a digital collage created by merging many layers of sourced imagery, with analog and digital photographs/scans of natural elements sourced in and around Ontario. Exploring and questioning notions of the natural world in relation to the human world; how they exist in tandem and where they separate from one another. Created with consideration of the reciprocity of care amongst natural narratives and how one might engage and interact with humans, plants, animals and nature in the context of care-based relations.
In considering how the artist cares for materials throughout the creation of artistic works, Keeling includes elements from plants and flowers that she has grown (ie. petals dropped from a flower) or has foraged from folks’ garden clippings. She scans, photographs, presses and repeats when preparing these sourced natural elements and adds them to what she lovingly refers to as her archive, which has been steadily growing since 2018.
the many roles of nonstop blooms serves as a gentle reminder to take care and show up for ourselves, our families, and our communities, as well as the incredible ecosystems and natural world around us.
About the Artist
Laura Kay Keeling (she/her/they) is a self-taught visual artist based in Hamilton. Her practice is rooted in a process-centered approach that integrates analog photography, video, digital collage and installation. Keeling has exhibited work across Ontario, the United States and South Korea and has received support from the Ontario Arts Council. Her work has been included in feature films, music albums and in The Walrus Mgazine, among others. Alongside her studio practice, Keeling is an active arts administrator and instructor.
