Girls Only Group Lessons

These classes are for females only. All Girls Only/Female Only programs take place at Dunbarton Indoor Pool.

Semi Private Lessons

Semi Private classes guarantee a maximum of 3 participants per class, are 1/2 hour in duration. These low ratio classes are offered at both pools. Learners of all ages and all swim levels may take advantage of Semi Private instruction.

Aquatic Leadership

Beginners just starting out or swimmers looking to improve their strokes will find that the new Adult Swimmer program will help them achieve their swimming goals. Swimmers will work to gain confidence in the water, develop smooth recognizable strokes, and improve their water fitness. Water Smart education is incorporated into all levels to support the Lifesaving Society’s mandate of drowning prevention.

Bronze Star develops swimming proficiency, lifesaving skill and personal fitness. Candidates refine their stroke mechanics, acquire self-rescue skills, and apply fitness principles in training workouts. Bronze Star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion and provides a fun introduction to lifesaving sport.

Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross.

Emergency First Aid is for people who want a general knowledge of first aid principles and the emergency treatment of injuries

Key Skills

  • Swimming & Lifesaving Strokes: Swim 25 m each of: front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, head-up front crawl, head-up breaststroke, whip kick, eggbeater, scissor kick or inverted scissor kick.
  • Rescue Drill: Enter the water and swim head-up 25 m to contact a passive victim or manikin located at the surface and carry 25 m.

Before registering: please ensure you meet the following prerequisites: Minimum age of 13 by the exam date, candidates aged 12 must hold a Bronze Star certification. Please ensure all
prerequisites are met before the course. No refunds will be given to those who do not meet them.

Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. This is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs.

Key Skills

  • Object Recovery & Transport: Starting in the water, swim 15 m and surface dive to recover a 10 lb. object; surface and carry the object 5 m – all within 60 secs.

Lifesaving Society Swim For Life Instructor course prepares the instructor to teach and evaluate the swimming strokes and related skills found in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program. Candidates acquire proven teaching methods, planning skills, and a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques.

National Lifeguard Pool certification is designed to develop the fundamental values, judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness required by lifeguards.
