Mayor Ashe’s Statement on the Lapu Lapu Day Festival Tragedy

Pickering, ON, April 27, 2025 – I am completely heartbroken by the devastating tragedy that occurred at the Lapu Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver.

What was meant to be a joyous celebration of heritage, pride, and freedom, was shattered by unthinkable violence. My deepest sympathies and prayers go out to all of the victims and their families, as well as the nearly million-strong Filipino-Canadians across our country.

Today is especially painful for Pickering and Durham Region, as we are home to a large, vibrant, and strong Filipino-Canadian community. I’ve reached out to a few of our local community leaders to offer our support, knowing how deeply this tragedy has affected them. We share in their grief and outrage over this senseless attack, which has taken innocent lives and left many more wounded.

As we mourn, reflect, and support one another, we stand united in solidarity, offering strength and compassion to our friends and families in Vancouver and all those affected by this horrific act.
